The IATSE is the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, of the United States, its Territories and Canada. Formed in 1893, the IATSE is a labor union that has represented behind the scenes workers for over 125 years. Our union rests upon our “Four Pillars of Success:” Leadership, Skills and Safety, Activism, and Communication.
Since 1903, Local 99 has represented entertainment industry workers in Salt Lake City and beyond. Our members originally installed screens, operated projectors in movie houses, and worked on travelling shows like Vaudeville. As the entertainment industry continued to flourish over the last century, our work and expertise continued to evolve and expand further from our humble beginnings. Today, Local 99 members work in convention centers, theatres, arenas, shops, performing art centers, and motion picture and television production, throughout Salt Lake City, the state of Utah, and southern Idaho. Local 99 is proud to be a part of an International union that is over 170,000 members strong, with Locals spanning coast-to-coast in the U.S., its Territories, and Canada.
As an IATSE Local 99 worker, you will be part of a community that fosters a culture of continuous learning where you can join in unity and solidarity with your fellow workers. Joining IATSE Local 99 is a decision that will increase your career opportunities and ultimately help you to secure your future as a professional in the entertainment industry.
Being a union member goes far beyond paying dues and wearing union swag. In the labor movement, the sense of community that is created amongst workers is called “solidarity.” As union members, solidarity is a term that is important to understand and practice in our daily lives because solidarity means standing with and supporting all workers, simply because they are workers, like you. IATSE workers are there to support each other, because when we speak up together we are always more powerful than when we act on our own.
We hope you are excited to become part of an organization that has been representing workers, like you, for well over a century. The benefits of working with us, joining the union, and participating in our growth and strength, are invaluable and will benefit you and your family for years to come.
