Summer 2022 Training Week

Join Local 99 for a week-long training and certification program to prepare you for work at upcoming tradeshows and concerts. Classes and hands-on trainings will be from June 29th to July 7th at the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City. Check out the week’s courses below. MEWP Aerial Work Platforms (High & Scissor Lifts) Re-Certification

DATE: Wednesday, June 29th

TIMES: 8AM to Noon OR 1PM to 5PM (Choose 1 time slot)

LOCATION: Salt Palace Room 260

PRE-REQUISITES: Must already have certification & 3 years with no accidents.

INSTRUCTORS: Reed Fanning & Scott Smith

This will be a complete review that includes OSHA & Industry Standards updates.

MEWP Aerial Work Platforms (High & Scissor Lifts) New Certification

DATE: Thursday, June 30th

TIME: 8AM to 5PM with a 1 hour lunch break

LOCATION: Salt Palace Room 260

PRE-REQUISITES: Must also complete the Rigging Safety & Sign Hanging Course (see below) in order to get this Certification and be able to operate lifts. This is the class and written test portion. Upon completion of test, you will schedule a time for instructor supervised hands-on certification. Dates for hands-on operation are Friday, July 1st – Thursday, July 7th at the Salt Palace Hall 3.

INSTRUCTORS: Reed Fanning & Scott Smith

This is a workplace safety program that insures the safe operation of High Lifts & Scissor Lifts. Each student will be able to safely operate both described lifts travelling through multiple driving/operating courses including tight obstacles, completing a practical evaluation that is observed and graded by instructors. Once the student completes the course 100%, the individual will receive a hand-written certificate card that is good for three years.

COUNTERBALANCED FORKLIFT & FREIGHT RE-CERTIFICATION

DATE: Wednesday, June 29th

TIMES: 8AM to Noon OR 1PM – 5PM (Choose 1 time slot)

LOCATION: Salt Palace Hall 1

PRE-REQUISITES: Must already have forklift certification that is expired or about to expired, issued June 2019. Current certification CANNOT be expired more than 60 days prior to this training date. If your certification is expired longer than 60 days, you must take the New Forklift Certification Course.

INSTRUCTORS: Ben Cloward & Joe Simonetti

COUNTERBALANCED FORKLIFT & FREIGHT NEW CERTIFICATION

DATE: Thursday, June 30th

TIMES: 8AM to Noon OR 1PM to 5PM (Choose 1 time slot)

LOCATION: Salt Palace Hall 1

PRE-REQUISITES: Must not have certification already OR certification is more than 60 days expired. Instructor supervised operating lifts hands-on training will take place from Friday, July 1st to Thursday, July 7th, in Salt Palace Hall 3. Students will schedule this hands-on training with their instructors after completing the test.

INSTRUCTORS: Ben Cloward & Joe Simonetti

Alll forklift operators will know and understand how to transfer loads from trailers (safety instructions) from dock to dock and to buildings. You will learn how to manage propane tanks of forklifts, chalk and block trailers, nose cones, dock plates, best methods to travel upgrade/downgrade, balancing loads safely, and travelling with no loads. All operators of all lifts must maintain safety at all times. Learn how to complete a full inspection and safety compliance on every machine. When both the written portion and operating portion is successfully completed with 80% or better, each student will receive a handwritten certification that must be available prior to operating a forklift for any contract employer.

RIGGING SAFETY & SIGN HANGING

DATE: Saturday, July 2nd

TIME: 8AM to 5PM with a one-hour lunch break

LOCATION: Salt Palace Hall 2

This class must be taken to receive your MEWP Aerial Platform Certification.

INSTRUCTORS: Rennie “Bucky” Rhysnburger & Mike Davis

Every venue, be it a convention center or outdoor event must sustain structural integrity. Both instructors have developed an intense but manageable course that includes the safety guidelines for proper rigging and sign hanging techniques. This course will include:

  • Creating a uniform consistency for numeric aisle signs
  • Building structrual integrity for aisle signs and overhead vendor booth signs
  • Building and the structrual attributes of truss building, including working with chained motor heists

STAGECRAFT ELECTRICS

DATE: Sunday, July 3rd

TIME: 8AM to 5PM with a one-hour lunch break

LOCATION: Salt Palace Hall 2

INSTRUCTOR: Rennie “Bucky” Rhysnburger

This course will focus on Stage Electrics including:

  • Working with high voltage power supplies such as feeder, multi pin, motor cables, breakouts & connectors
  • Safety regarding electrical power
  • Completing the circuitry of all stages that Local 99 Employers use

TRADESHOW ELECTRICS

DATE: Friday, July 1st

TIMES: 8AM to Noon OR 1PM to 5PM (Choose 1 time slot)

LOCATION: Salt Palace Hall 2

INSTRUCTORS: Derek Meik & Julie Leach

This course will cover everything Electrics for Tradeshows including:

  • The basics of amperage, watts & volts
  • Electrical connectors, Breaker Circuit Panels (BCPs), and how to connect power from floor pockets safely
  • Using testers to ensure power is available
  • What determines how many watts are needed per device usage
  • The dangers and hazards of electricity and how to keep yourself and others safe

TRADESHOW DECORATING

DATE: Sunday, July 3rd

TIMES: 8AM To Noon OR 1PM to 5PM (Choose 1 time slot)

LOCATION: Salt Palace Hall 2

INSTRUCTORS: Debi Merkley & Ryan LaSalle

Students will experience the most expeditious means to complete the making of all Tradeshow Deco departments:

  • Pipe & Drape
  • Carpet
  • Tables (Tops/skirts/types)
  • Furniture
  • Graphics
  • Floor marking
  • Booth layout

TRADESHOW INSTALL & DISMANTLE (I&D) WITH METALS

DATE: Monday, July 4th

TIMES: 8AM to Noon OR 1PM to 5 PM (Choose 1 time slot)

LOCATION: Salt Palace Hall 2

INSTRUCTORS: Joe Simonetti & Mike Davis

In this course, attendees will have hands-on experiences learning the complete ins and outs of shipping containers, how they are systematically delivered, emptied and returned for load-out which requires specific step-by-step procedures. Attendees will also learn about the following:

  • Electrical plots, booth layouts, carpet laying, critical measuring and using a 1/16th scale tape measure
  • Install and dismantle of metal wall layouts including the proper part names
  • Names and methods of how to secure fasteners and how to identify each by name
  • Ladder safety Do’s and Don’ts
  • How to load into a booth
  • How to operate hand toods, including specialty hand tools
